BuMpY

I don’t know what else to say but our journey is definitely full of bumps, some are big and some are not. Last week I took Derek in for a hearing evaluation and they determined that he is almost completely deaf. There is a lot of fluid back behind his ears or it could be from drug toxicity. The solution? Surgery! to put tubes in his ears. We haven’t received a date yet but it will be relatively soon. Blah, I thought that Derek was done with surgery, at least for a few years.

I’ll post current pictures soon.

What’s a Mother to do?

Preface: Derek picked up a habit/trait from our dogs and now we are trying to break it. We have tried nearly everything except smacking him on the nose with a newspaper. He barks, ALL DAY LONG. He stands in our front window and barks at EVERYTHING, people, cats, dogs, cars and I think you get the idea…

Fast Forward to this morning- We did an art project that turned into a complete flop making Easter Eggs by wrapping starch soaked yarn around balloons (I think we’ll go to paper eggs.) Derek quickly gave up as Monet sat with me a tried to make it work spilling liquid starch all over herself. He then pulled out his plastic tools and dismatled Monet’s rocking horse. After I finally resolved that the project was a flop I went to rinse myself, assist Derek in putting the rocking horse back together and  give Monet a bath.

I had drawn a tub of water and just put Monet in when someone rang the doorbell (obvious ignoring the do not solicite sign,) Derek and the dogs just go nuts barking. Well I can’t go to the door, so I just “ignore” it yelling at the dogs to be quite…Derek continues to bark. The person then starts to knock. I peek out and see it is a sales person that has a clear bottle with a blue lid in hand (this company does not think they are soliciting even though they sell you a water system after testing your water and telling you how bad it is for you and your family, it is a ” free public service they offer,” they have been here a few times.) I decide I’ll ignore it again, asking Derek to stop barking yet another time (he never did stop.)

The woman walks away and heading towards the neighbor’s house. Obviously she must be disturbed by the high pitched barking, half naked child running from window to window in my house, and I can’t say I blame her. She asks the neighbor if everything is “ok” here and tells him her experience. She asks that he should come check it out or call the police. He promptly comes over to do a wellfare check and I “try” to explain this craziness, I don’t think I had him convinced though.

“So how was your day?” Steve will ask when he gets home. What should I say? Well what would you say?

FYI – As I am typing this post Derek is laying on the floor sucking on ice cubes? just like our black lab. Boy, I need to get this boy out with other children more often, that or a shock collar.

Getting into a Preschool is harder than applying for Harvard

We were called a couple weeks ago that our first choice in preschool was not going to hold classes next fall. It really looked like a great fit for Derek but what can you do but start the research again.

I started calling preschools in the area right away. Nearly all of them are full or REQUIRE him to be there 2 years to be Kindergarten ready, per their ciriculum. I stumbled upon a program ran by our local school district and after talking to them a short while they thought with all of Derek’s medical history it would be wise to have him evaluated for Special Education. Hopefully we tackle any issues he has early that the Special Ed label doesn’t stay with him when he gets older with kids who can be mean just to be mean.

We filled out  large packet, took Derek to meet the guidance counselor and we are now waiting for a call to meet with specialists for an evaluation. He needs to show a defincency in 2 of 5 areas in order to qualify for the program as a special ed student. I certainly have mixed feelings on this but if Derek can get caught up and succeed in school in the long run, we are all for it!
